The East Hartford Fire Department shall meet these goals and objectives through the following functions:
• Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement.
• Fire Inspections, Building Surveys, and Pre-Fire Planning
• Public and Fire Department Education Programs
• Fire Suppression/Rescue/Hazardous Material Services
• Emergency Medical Services - Basic and Advanced Life Support
133 Uniformed personnel and seven civilians make up the full time staff of the East Hartford Fire Department. There are 5 firehouses located throughout the 18 square miles of town. The East Hartford Fire Department operates 5 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, 1 rescue company, and 1 incident command vehicle. The department responded to 9487 emergencies in 2005.
In addition to fighting fires the department plays a major role in the delivery of emergency medical services. Each engine company is staffed with a paramedic and all apparatus carry Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs). All firefighters are trained at a minimum of Basic Life Support (BLS) care. One third of the department's firefighters are paramedics.
